Common Causes and Solutions About the Functional Depression of Ion Exchange Resins

There are many factors that affect the processing capacity of ion exchange resin. When we use the in daily time, if an abnormal depression come out in processing performance, we generally analysis the cases by the following sequences and take measures.

1. Check the height of resin bed, and observe if the resin loss or not

The capacity of the quantitative resin to handle the feed liquid under a specific condition is relatively stable. Therefore, when the resins in the system decreases, the system‘s handling capacity for the feed liquid under the same working condition will naturally decrease. When the processing capacity of the liquid decreases, we can firstly judge whether there is a problem of resin loss by observing the height of the resin bed. If it is true, that means the water cap of the resin column or filter net maybe damage, so we need to change or replace it, adding the resin and observe the system’s processing capacity of feed liquid again.

Whether there is a bias flow phenomenon in the feed liquid

If the feed liquid flows through the resin bed with a biased flow,it means that parts of the resin involved in the treatment did not play a role in, therefore,at the same condition the capacity of handling the feed liquid would be decrease. So, if the biased flow come out, there would be a problem of bias flow, on the one hand, the liquid distribution may be uneven, and you can check the liquid output of the rehydration system;on the other hand,  there is air exist in the resin bed cause the biased flow In this situation, the method of reverse liquid feeding or back washing can be used to discharge the air in the bed,let the resin settle naturally, and then forward liquid feeding treatment can be used to observe the change of the system's processing capacity of the material liquid.

3.
Analysis the feed material condition obviously change or not

If the composition of the feed liquid changes, it will also affect the adsorption behavior of the resin. Therefore, we generally make an agreement on the composition of the feed liquid. The increase of the target ion concentration in the feed liquid, the increase of the interference ion concentration, the change of ion species, the change of pH, etc. It may affect the processing capacity of the resin.

Therefore, the periodic inspection and evaluation of the liquid inlet environment and composition is also an effective measure to maintain the stable operation of the system.
